Old Dubai vs New Dubai: how to do both in one trip

The spice markets of Deira and the towers of the Marina feel like different cities. Here is how to fit both in.
Old Dubai vs New Dubai is the comparison every first-time visitor should plan around. The spice markets of Deira and the towers of the Marina feel like different cities — and seeing both is what makes a Dubai trip complete.
Most first-time visitors see only the new city — the Mall, the Marina, the Burj. They miss the Dubai that actually makes the place interesting.
Start in Deira in the morning. Cross the Creek on a wooden abra for one dirham, then lose an hour in the Gold Souk and the Spice Souk. You do not have to buy anything; the colour and noise of the stalls are the point. Haggling is expected — start at roughly half the asking price.
Spend the late morning in Al Fahidi, the restored heritage district. The narrow lanes, wind-tower houses and small museums are the closest you get to what Dubai looked like before the boom. The Coffee Museum and the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding are both worth a stop.
Then cross back to the new city for the evening. The Dubai Fountain show at the Burj Khalifa Lake runs every thirty minutes after sundown, and it is genuinely impressive in person. Dinner with a fountain view is the classic finish.
The trick is pacing. Old Dubai is best walked in the cooler morning hours; the skyline is best after dark. Doing both in one day, with a long lunch in between, is the perfect Dubai day.
