A first-timer's guide to the Dubai desert

What to wear, when to go, and how to pick a desert safari that isn't a tourist conveyor belt.
This Dubai desert safari guide covers everything a first-timer needs: what to wear, when to go, and how to pick a safari that is not a tourist conveyor belt.
The desert is at its best from October to April, when afternoon temperatures settle around 28°C and the evenings are cool enough for an open-air dinner under the stars. In summer, safaris still run, but the heat limits dune bashing to the early morning and late afternoon slots.
Wear closed shoes and loose layers. Sand gets everywhere, and once the sun drops the temperature falls fast — a light jacket is not optional between December and February. Sunglasses and a scarf are genuinely useful against wind-blown sand.
Pick an operator with small vehicles and a camp limited in size. A 200-person camp is a food court with camels; a 30-guest camp is an experience. Ask how many guests share the camp before you book, and check whether dune bashing, sandboarding and the BBQ dinner are all included in the price.
Go for the golden hour. Dune bashing is more fun in soft low light, and the photographs are incomparably better. The classic evening safari runs from roughly 3pm to 9pm and includes sunset on the dunes, a BBQ dinner and live entertainment.
For families, morning safaris are the calmer choice — shorter, cooler and without the late return. For couples and photographers, a private vehicle with a flexible schedule is worth the premium.
And take at least one moment away from the camp lights. Ten minutes in the quiet, with the stars out, is the part everyone remembers.
